Forged Strength with Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel forgings combine the strength of forged metal with the corrosion resistance of stainless alloys. The forging process breaks up the cast structure and closes internal porosity. This gives a denser, stronger material than cast stainless steel. We produce these forgings for chemical pump shafts, high-pressure stainless valve bodies, marine components, and food processing equipment parts. If your application requires both corrosion resistance and high load capacity, stainless steel forgings are a better choice than castings.

Material Options and Forging Ratio

Our common materials are 304 austenitic stainless steel, 316L austenitic stainless steel, 2205 duplex stainless steel, and 17-4PH precipitation-hardening stainless steel. We use hot forging as the primary process. The forging ratio is at least 3 for standard parts. For pressure-bearing and important load parts, we increase the ratio to 3.5 to 4. This higher ratio ensures better internal refinement. The dimensional tolerance for open-die forgings follows GB/T 15826 FG grade. For parts up to 200 millimeters, the tolerance is plus 0.8 to plus 1.2 millimeters. For parts from 200 to 500 millimeters, the tolerance is plus 1.2 to plus 2.0 millimeters.
Precision Machining Option

We also offer closed-die forging with precision machining. For parts under 500 millimeters, we can hold the dimensional tolerance to plus or minus 0.01 millimeters. The center distance tolerance is also plus or minus 0.01 millimeters. This level of precision is suitable for finished components that go directly into assembly. The fit surfaces have a roughness of Ra 1.6 micrometers or less. The general machined surfaces are held to Ra 3.2 micrometers or less.
Mechanical Properties and Heat Treatment

The mechanical properties depend on the material and heat treatment. For 316L in the solution-treated condition, the tensile strength is at least 485 MPa. The yield strength is at least 170 MPa. The elongation is at least 40 percent. For 2205 duplex stainless steel, the tensile strength is at least 620 MPa. The yield strength is at least 450 MPa. For 17-4PH after aging, the tensile strength reaches the 1000 MPa range. We do all heat treatment in our own shop. Austenitic stainless steels get solution treatment. Duplex steels get solution treatment. 17-4PH gets age hardening.
Inspection for Non-Magnetic Materials

Stainless steel is non-magnetic. This means we cannot use MT magnetic particle inspection for surface defects. Instead, we use UT Level 2 for internal inspection and PT dye penetrant for surface inspection. This combination gives complete coverage of internal and surface defects. We provide a spectral material report with every shipment. Important parts also include inspection reports. Our 3000-ton press handles the forging. Our testing lab has a spectrometer, universal testing machine, impact tester, and Leeb hardness tester.
